Are you afraid of dark?I came to know much later that this was the last novel of Sudney Sheldon before his demise. 'AYAOF' starts of well with four different murders leaving the protagonists devasted. All the murders seam to have a common thread pointing towards the organisation the victims worked for - KIG. Two widows of the victims - Kelly Mark and Diane Stevens have their path crossed accidentally but find themselves as target in the prowling claws of the murderer. Till the halfway, SS manages to hold your attention well but this time Sheldon doesn't bother to maintain the suspense. Instead he lays the thread of the whodunit yarn bare and later the novel turns to be on run. Then the novel becomes so predictable and unintentionally funny with the so called powerful 'villians' reducing themselves to a comedy stock. After a while the 'run' of Diane & Kelly becomes stale. At this point it reminds you a lot of SS's other novels - "If Tommorrow Comes", "The sky is falling" etc. However the saving grace of this novel is that it tried to get into the emotional domain of the widows and it works except for Ms. Reynold's episode. It might have been good if SS's other novels were not read but defintely not a worthy swan song for Sidney Sheldom. - {oshits} reads.

DisclosureI know that I had catched up with Michael Chrichton's "Disclosure" almost 17 years after its publishing, but it is fine that atleast I was able to read it. First I saw this as movie ofcourse of the titillation factor. Thanks to Vijayakrishnan, I read MC's "Prey" after which I discovered MC. To be frank I read 'Disclosure' only for the graphical sexual encounter, but once I passed that, after a lull, the novel picked up so fast that I found it irresistable to keep it down. 'Disclosure' says that 'Sex is all about power' in the workplace rather than a means of harassment. It gives a peek inside the corporate world, where you need to be competent player to move ahead in the corporate ladder.

Amar Chitra KathaI lovely call Buttu as "Kapeesh kutty" sometimes because he resembles one of my all time favourite cartoon character. If you are above 30 and having the habit of reading novels in your young age then you might know who "Kapeesh" is. Else you may not be able to identify with my excitement. How many of you know the existence of children books like Ambulimama / Chandamama from Vijaya Combines, and its close rival Balamitra, Rani Comics, Muthu Comics, Poonthalir / Tinkle from Pai House? They were very popular in 1980s and with the advent of TV channels and Cartoon Network, the reading habit if the children were in decline and all the above were closed. However Chandamama was revived by a Mumbai based corporate after 2 years in a different format. Balamitra is dead I believe. Tinkle had relauched itself with Animation and digital copies along with the regular Amar Chitra Katha titles. {sidebar id=2} Today whatever I am, those Ambulimama and ACK played a great role in shaping me up in my formative days. Whatever English I know, is because of reading Chandamama in school days. I was disappointed when I learnt that Chandamama and its contemporaries had their shutters down. I am yet to get accustomed to the newly revived Chandamama format. When I was browsing online for Amar Chitra Kadha Comics, I found that many people of my intrest had scanned and uploaded the ACK titles. Again it was disappointing to see that blog is also closed. So to keep those novels live, I have decided to collect the links, torrents related to them and index them in my Library pages. Expect the titles of Amar Chitra Katha soon in My Library. Already I have ordered a collection online for Buttu. BTW - Kapeesh is a lovable small monkey with a tail expanding and contracting whenever it wishes.

Click the article to read furtherFor a long time I have been thinking of reading the "Devdas: A Novel" by Saratchandra Chattopadhyay, which had been the raw material for so many movies of the same name. However I had watched only Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 2002 movie with Shahrukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai and Madhuri Dixit in the lead roles. Even without reading the novel I found the movie badly made. After seeing "Parineeta" I found that both the novels - "Parineeta" and "Devdas" very much similiar in incidents and treatment, so I thought that Sarathchandra had written same story with two names. But when I got the chance to read this "Devdas" flying in air, I found that Sanjay Leela Bhansali had adapted the story (read as mixed with Parineeta) to mount it in a lavish scale at the cost of its soul.

Two States of my marriageWhat happens when your the film rights of your earlier books were lapped up instantly? You concieve your subsequent novels as movies itself. That's what has happened with Chetan Bhagat. Since his ONACC & Five Point Someone had been adapted as movies and with '3MOML' being converted into screenplay, Chetan's next novel had become "Bollywood" ready. Seems like Chetan will incorporate romantic songs into his next novel making it "screen" ready. The love story of a Punjabi boy & Tamil girl is so cliched and predictable through out. We, Tamilians have been subjected to the headache of viewing the same story thrice around the same time in "Poovellam Kaettuppaar", "Jodi" and "Minsara Kanna". Unfortunately this "2SOMM" will make the fourth version, so similiar is the incidents and screenplay. In the Chetan Bhagat's books there used to be an element of sarcastic humour but here it steps into racist arrogance at times. Example - When Krish gets down at Chennai Airport he finds everybody dark and pot bellied. And Chetan Bhagat fills with his cliched premarital sex episodes (so many sex scenes) and blackmailing the boss. Don't know when CB will come out of these repetitive stuffs. However the saving grace is his simple vocab, fluid writing style that never never you off at any point. Supposedly based on CB's own love story, I didn't like / enjoy what I read in the 260 pages but it might appeal some people.

Three Mistakes of My LifeThis was the first Chetan Bhagat's book I had bought but the last one to be read :-). As usual CB targets at the Indian youth and the issues they stumble upon while building a career. Set in the "business land" Gujarat, 3MOL takes a look at the influence of religion, cricket and Politics in the common Indian's life. Ahemadabad is the best choice for the story because of its political & geographical turmoil, the state underwent in quick succession. The book opens and travels through Govind Patel's perspective. The friendship between Govind, Ishaan and Omi is explained well even though Omi's character is not etched fully. Vidya's character is mere a distraction succumbing to the "Bollywood forumula". May be CB's recent acquaintace with Bollywood & prospects of turning this into a movie had a role for creating Vidya's character. The character of 12 year old Ali, even though helps in jingoistic perspective, plays a crucial role towards the end. The "mistakes" which Govind confesses to have made are so frivolous that we don't even notice them when we read the book. But as the whole product, it works. This book seems to have sealed a "template" for CB's novels so that it gives a sense of 'deja-vu' many places - routine pre-marital sex episode, a "twist" telephone call, friendship among the protagonists & etc. Hope CB had broken away from this mould in his "The 2 States of my marriage", which I am yet to read. Don't be surprised if you hear any Bollywood movie is made with this '3MOML' novel & Sharman Joshi as one of the leads :-) - {oshits} reads!!!

One Night at the Call CentreOflate I had given up my policy of reading a book over a week / 10 days because I get only the weekends for reading, so let me use the same to fullest. This weekend saw me catching up the Chetan Bhagat's best seller "One night at the Call center (ON@TCC)", which I bought for my friend Renuka on her request but couldn't meet her after that. This movie was made as Bollywood movie "Hello", starring Sohail Khan, Sharman Joshi, Gul Panag, Eesha Khoppikar, Amrita Arora and Salman Khan in the Guest Appearance, directed by his brother-in-law Atul Agnihotri. The best part about Chetan is his simple yet fluid writing style that makes the story flow smoothly. His vocabulary is not intimidating instead is arresting and captivating the reader's thoughts. ON@TCC works well for its approach towards the Indian youths and ends with a positive attitude. Not to miss in the whole book is the Chetan's male chauvinist humour, sarcasstic take on woman behaviour at various instances.
