One thing leads to another... and we end up experiencing new pleasures..

{mosimage}This week's Ananda Vikatan had more in store for me. I was able to identify with a couple of articles like "Child Prodigy" and "Killing periods of unemployment". Surprisingly the article about Child Prodiges sounded synonymous with what I wrote some months back about today's children losing their innocence in the name of intelligence. This time the writer took real life examples like Dileep (15), son of doctor parents in Trichy, who had performed surgery and his father, who aspired his son's name in Guinness Book of Records, is now in problem and Pudhiya (5) from Orissa whose (parent's) efforts of a 500 KM non-stop Marathon was thwarted by the police. Last time when Pudhiya completed his 5 KM run in 7+ minutes, he fainted and the pressures of performance and psychological nature were attributed for it. Gnani completes his article by citing his experience of interviewing a child star about 15 years ago, thus suubstantiating his argument that it is the parent's greediness for name, fame and money that the child prodigies are formed in most cases. Let kids be the kids, let us allow them enjoy their innocence rather than repenting at the later age.

Kamba RamayanaI am not a hardcore religious person, but somewhere it stayed in my subconscious mind that reading "Sundara Kanda" at the trying times will bring in good things. I always used to recommend the same to my friends and sister, gift them a copy of "Sundara Kanda", even though till now I hadn't got a chance to do so. Right now I am jobless, somewhere the insecurity is trying to creep in and I thought why not we practise what we used to preach. Then I changed my mind - why "Sundara Kanda" alone, why not whole of "Ramayana". It had been many years since I read that epic last time. So I started reading "Ramayana", written / translated in Tamil by the renowned poet of classic literature - "Kambar". Since I had read the Valmiki Ramayana also, I noticed small changes adapted to Tamil nativity, which I found intresting the liberties taken while adapting to local culture.

It would have been a big loss to the literary field if Endemoori Virendranath hadn't decided to resign his bank job to become a full fledged writer. This was exactly what I felt when I read his thriller "Thookku Thandanai" which is a translated version of Telugu "Abhilasha". He is one of the few writers who is able to carve a niche for himself in the minds of readers of other language. Speciality of EV is his versatility. He can write thrillers, family dramas and romance at ease. He writes in Telugu and his most of the works are translated by Susila Kanagadurga and Gowri Kribanandhan. Gowri Kribhanandhan had done a neat job in translating it into Tamil and juxtaposing it with the Tamil milieu. If you had travelled in the hairpin bends of a hill station, then you can feel the same thrilling experience throughout the 376 pages of this novel.

Meendum ThulasiThe story takes off exactly from the moment where "Thulasi Thalam" ends. This time it starts from the view of antagonists and how they try to settle the scores with the people who killed their leader "Kaadhara". It is really tough to write a sequel to the novel that had raised the bar to higher standards. Endemoori Virendranath manages to succeed only to a certain extent but my opinion is that he has deliberately attempted to reduce the starkness and smudge the drear of sorcery. I personally feel that this sequel is a sort of bit confused effort in which direction the novel had to be taken either to believe that black magic exists or it is just a early concept of hypnotism.

Yandamoori VirendranathI won't recommend this novel to people with weak heart or soft hearted people. It is a real spooky thriller that gives an eerie feeling of deja vu. My experience of reading this were really terrific. Yes! they were, not it was. First time I read it about 5 years back at my cousin's place. I read it at a stretch because I had to leave to my home that night. I reached Cuddalore, since I didn't get an auto rickshaw at late night I walked all the way to home. Through out the way it was very haunting and felt relieved once I reached the home. That night I slept with lights on. Second time I read last week here in Abu Dhabi.

It is a simple phrase we use mostly when we get drowned in the sweet old memories and this novel by Stella Bruce is also on the same theme. Sometimes the painful memories give a sarcastic pleasure in revisting them and thats how our protagonist Ramkumar derives it from the incidents that wrench his heart. After all life is something that should be balanced with the past and the present. You can't completely forget the past. This was one of the most acclaimed novel of its times when it came as a series in Anandha Vikatan weekly. This novel had a terrific impact on me in the sense that it reminded me a lot of incidents when I used to be an impulsive person and some incidents of this novel had actually happened in my place. In a way this novel is something I took closer to my heart as it showed how one should be in relationships.

Sujatha does it again. This time he takes up the problems urban college goers have and had portrayed it in a realistic manner that makes you realise with the brutal facts. As the name suggests it is about the pleasure of touch, one night stands, that brings along with complications like unwanted pregnancy, Sexually transmitted diseases (STD) and its implications over the psyche of the concerned individuals. The best of a Sujatha's novel is that the incidents are not sugar coated but offered as a bitter pill tough to swallow. Here also Sujatha does the same with the protagonists Akalya, Sridhar & Raghu.
