I hope this post will be useful for the people who want to have their laptops / desktops shut down automaticall after a certain time. Aadhi was so obsessed with IceAge movies that he insisted on playing them always. He is very much aware of the computer functions that if I click "Shut Down", he starts crying. So I wanted to look for options that will automatically shutdown the computer after a specified time that I can pass it off as "powercut for the laptop". None of the freeware available met my requirement and I accidentally came upon this very useful option that doesn't require any additional software for shutting down the computer.

Sometimes back my brother-in-law, who is having a Computer Center at Mettur, asked me how to block the USB ports which the students are misusing. I suggested him to disable the USB ports in the device manager but he said that since the mouse & keyboards he uses are USB based, the students just plug out the mouse or keyboard and use their USB devices to copy / transfer the confidential materials as well as unmentionable materials.

I have a problem in remembering the WiFi passwords until I choose them. Sometimes when you go to your friends place, they'll key in the passwords for you so it will be there in the system but unknown to you. Today I came across this useful portable tool which helps us in revealing the passowrds of all the saved WiFi connections. You can't use this tool to find the passwords of the neighbours' WiFi connections for hacking into their network. So use it without fear.

Sometimes we end up hurting ourselves by letting some softwares installing their toolbars in the browsers. These toolbars are not only obtrusive, nagging but also slow down the browser's performance. Some browsers can be a threat to your security, so it is always advisable to choose the browser toolbars with caution while we are asked to install any browser toolbars. There are some rogue toolbars that refuse to uninstall themselves even after you try to uninstall via "Programs and Features" in the Control panel of the windows. This piece of software is helpful in uninstalling the unwanted toolbars and the best part is that it is "portable", no need to install. Just unzip, extract and run the software. I checked it with Antivirus program and thankfully it didn't have any malware attached to it. Please scan it with your Antivirus software before use.

I stumble upon new softwares based on the needs only. When I am working on the computer (desktop or laptop) Buttu insists on sitting on my lap. Ofcourse it is lovely to spend those moments, he gives nightmare effects by pressing random keys while I am typing. So I had to look for some solution to overcome this. As usual Google fetched some choices like Kid-key-lock, Toddler Keys and KeyFreeze. Out of these three I found KeyFreeze to be simple and meeting my requirements.

என்னடா இந்த பையன் அடுத்த Android post போட்டிருக்கான்... அவன் கிட்டே smartphone இருக்குறதை காமிக்கிறானோன்னு நினைச்சுக்காதீங்க... இன்னைக்கு காலையிலே ரொம்ப யதேச்சையா இந்த Android app-ஐ பார்த்தேன். Deccan Herald பேப்பர்ல ஒரு மூலையிலே குட்டியூண்டா Hotmail founder-ஆன சபீர் பாட்டியா தான் புதிதாக உருவாக்கிய JaxtrSMS என்ற அவருடைய free SMS application நல்ல வரவேற்பை பெரும் என்று நம்புவதாக சொல்லியிருந்தார். நமக்கு தான் Android, application-ங்குற வார்த்தைகளை பார்த்தாலே கை உதற ஆரம்பிச்சிடுமே. உடனே எனது mobile-ல் download செய்துபார்த்தேன். சரி! அது என்ன JaxtrSMS?

அபுதாபியிலே இருந்தபோது ரொம்ப நாளைக்கு நான் ஒரு நோக்கியா ‘கல்’ மொபைல் வச்சிருந்தேன். அப்போ எனக்கு மொபைல் மேலே அவ்ளோ craze எல்லாம் இல்லை. அப்புறம் அபுதாபியிலே இருந்து இந்தியாவுக்கு வந்தப்போ அபுதாபி ஞாபகமா ஒரு Sony Ericcson w700i வாங்கிட்டு வந்தேன். அப்புறம் அது தொலைஞ்சப்போ தற்காலிகமா ஒரு நோக்கியா 1100 வாங்கினேன். ஆனா அது எனக்கு ரொம்ப பிடிச்சுபோச்சு. காரணம் அதிலே இந்திய மொழிகள் enable செய்யப்பட்டு இருந்தது. அதனாலே நான் என்னோட மொபைலிலே தமிழ்-ஐ main language-ஆக வச்சிருந்தேன். மத்த advanced model-உம் எதிலேயும் தமிழ் இல்லாததால கிட்டத்தட்ட 2 வருஷம் அதே மொபைலேயே வச்சிருந்தேன். அப்புறம் இன்னொரு மொபைலும் தொலைஞ்சதால இந்த தமிழ் மொபைல் இன்னுமொரு வருஷம் கூட இருந்தது. லண்டன் போன ஞாபகார்த்தமா என்னோட முதல் Smartphone-ஐ வாங்கினேன்.

Buttu, even though a dream / breeze to play with, is a nightmare when it comes to working on the desktop when he is around. I use to practise SAP in the evenings or whenever possible, but at that time Buttu will be awake and in the full form. He directly attacks the vulnerable points like the Power switch of UPS, Desktop and the CD Drive eject button. While I can manage the Desktop's "Power" button action in the "Power Options" by setting to "Do nothing" and plaster over the UPC's power button & Restart button, the CD Drive remains the most vulnerable "prey" for him. No matter how much you bully / plead with him, Buttu never heeds to them. Thankfully I came across this small utility "CD Drive Lock" just like the "Monitor Power Off" which I shared with you earlier. Just include it in the "Start Up" group so that the Drive is locked at the moment Windows is on. So you can access your CD / DVD drive for booting purposes. - {oshits} readers would've found this post useful.

Within a couple of days of 'font hacking' my Amazon Kindle to display Tamil fonts, I happened to come across an article in "Digit" magazing about a new OS for Amazon Kindle. It was called 'Duokan' and it was originally created in Chinese interface. I can hear somebody asking me "Now only you had managed to get Tamil in your Amazon Kindle, why the hell you want to go for OS change immediately?". When I read about 'Duokan' the only feature that attracted me was that it makes the font sizes adjustable for PDF files. I got intrested because I have lot of Tamil books in pdf format but I am unable to convert them to *.mobi format. So when I tried reading the tamil PDF files with the "new feature" of font size adjusting, all I get is "???????". Also the OS consumes close to 1 GB out of 3.5 GB available space. So I uninstalled the Duokan OS and as of now I am happy with my Kindle OS itself.

நான் மிகவும் ஆசைப்பட்டு வாங்கிய 'Amazon' Kindle-ல் தமிழ் எழுத்துருக்கள் (Fonts) வரவில்லை என்பது ஒரு ஆதங்கமாகவே இருந்தது. இருந்தால் என்ன? நாம் தமிழ் புத்தகங்களை 'PDF' வடிவில் படித்துக்கொள்ளலாம் என்று எனக்கு சமாதானம் செய்துக்கொண்டேன். பின்பு என் மாமா அனுப்பிய 'URL-ல்' யூனிகோட் எழுத்துருக்களை நிறுவுவது குறித்து படித்த போது தமிழ் எழுத்துருக்களை எனது Amazon Kindle-ல் நிறுவிவிட முடியும் என்ற நம்பிக்கை தோன்றியது. வெளிநாடுகளில் Data Plan-களோடு கூடிய 'i-Phone'-ஐ வாங்கி அதை 'Jail Breaking' என்ற முறையில் 'உடைத்து' கறுப்பு சந்தையில் விற்பது வழக்கம். அதுபோல Amazon Kindle-ஐ 'Jail Break' செய்து, நமக்கு பிடித்த Screen saver, எழுத்துருக்கள் (Fonts) ஆகியவற்றை இணைத்துக்கொள்ளும் முறையை அந்த Link-கில் அறிந்துக்கொள்ள நேர்ந்தது.
