Just now I finished seeing all the 20 episodes of "Sorna Regai" from the old Raj TV's "Marmadesam" series at a single stretch (took about 6 hours). It is really a short and spooky series as usual by Indra Sounderrajan, who is a specialist in superstition / sprituality based thrillers. In this series Indra had taken the 'palmistry' as a backdrop and topping it up with a dacoitry and conspiracies. Surprisingly only in the last episode I noticed that it was directed by CJ Baskar, not by Naga. However the style of lighting, shot composing had so much of Naga's influence. The cinematography by Sakthi Saravanan deserves a special mention. The performances by the lead - 'Poovilangu' Mohan, 'Thalaivasal' Vijay, Suresh Chakravarthy, 'Delhi' Ganesh and Mahima were a class apart. The story drags a bit in the middle with Anwar's flashback episodes throwing spanner in the otherwise sonic speed story, but regains its pace towards the end. By the time I am writing is 12:30 a.m and I an going to sleep tonite with lights on..

Take a look at this serial on 'Rajshri' site. {oshits} reads for this retro article

It has been quite a while I have blogged (barring yesterday's forwarded post) and I would like to attribute Kalki's "Ponniyin Selvan" as reason for the lag. I am majorly hooked to this voluminous historical novel that I couldn't resist carrying the book everywhere I go. This is the second time I am reading this novel and it is fresh even then. Other than 'Ponniyin Selvan', I caught upo with few moviez I missed this year's release. Santhosh Subramanium, Saroja (simply refreshing), Subramaniyapuram (All starting with 'S') and have the DVDs of Race, Jodha Akbar, Jaane Tu.... yet to be seen. Of late I noticed that positive buzz about the offbeat hit 'Poo', and an extensive promotion for it. When I saw Parvathy crying uncontrollably even after the shot was over during the making of the movie, I realised how much truth is there in Parvathy's claim that she worked hard for the movie. And... this lady, who is a self appointed critic, named Suhasini Maniratnam raved about the movie in her show, described Parvathy's performance as exaggerated, spoke with her for just a couple of minutes but singled out Srikanth as revelation, chatted with him for lengths and awarded him as "Champion of the week". Too much recognition for a junior artiste.. - {oshits} readers for this chunk...

Oflate I have stopped writing music reviews - simple... that no today's music intrests me, or compels me to record my opinion about it. Infact lack of soul in today's music either in Tamil or Malayalam or even Hindi had made me revisit the golden period of Indian Film Music i.e late 70's - mid90's. With Maestro Illayaraja making a rapid stride in comeback with small budget films like "Kangalum Kavi Paaduthey" or "Mallepoovu (Telugu)" or "Vinodayatra" & "Innathe Chinta Vishayam (Mal.)", my playlist is filled by him only. So I just thought of how to share my playlist with you, suddenly I remembered my old account with "IMEEM" that I signed up 9-10 months ago. Like weekly Top 10 programmes, I have decided to share my playlist (mostly melodies) with you all. Hope you'll like them. No need of hanging around in the same page, just launch the stand alone player and continue your browsing. Happy music..

Even though I anticipated much for its release I was able to see "Dashavatharam" only after 70 days of its thearrical release. It is a sort of an ego trip of a narcisst Kamal Hassan. No doubt that too much hardwork had gone into its concpetion and execution, but somewhere the story falls flat beacuse of its wafer thin plot. Believe me, I didn't read any of its reviews till date as I felt that I might be biased towards or against of it. Balaram Naidu is loveable but most of the roles out of 10 were inconsequential and created to fill that number 10. Seems Kamal Hassan had worked backwards after finalising the title. Asin sparkles in few moments but had nothing to do except screeching "ஐய்யோ......" and "என் பெருமாளை என் கிட்டே குடுத்திடுங்கோ...". Technically speaking too much efforts had gone into the visuals and it shows... That's it the problem - IT SHOWS. The VFX are very easily identifiable, so it feels like watching a row resolution movie on a computer monitor. Great idea but not so great finesse... in terms of content as well as technique.

Definitely a film ahead of its times. No wonder nobody else is so menacing like him as a villain. The show belongs to Kalyan Kumar and MN Nambiar.

Pirivom SanthippomKaru. Pazhaniappan is somebody whom I think could be my mentor in marriage life. I consider his 'Parthiban Kanavu' a bible for all who start their marriage life with a cynicism. After a disastrous 'Sivappathikaram', Karu. Pazhaniappan returns to his familiar terrain - the marital life of a girl with dreams of being in a big family. In 'Pirivom Santhippom', Karu. Pazhaniappan dissects the concept of 'thani kudithanam' (nuclear family) and puts the life of a newly weds under a microscopic scanner. Karu. Pazhaniappan manages to demystify the so called privacy and space a nuclear family (thani kudiththanam) offers. Also he breaks the prototype of a 'realistic' movie by making PS, a reality far from regular grisly output. "Pirivom Santhippom" is colourful yet honest, earnest and at the same time tugs the chords of your emotional strings.
